Going Indie After Big Tech
A workshop on the transition to independent creative work
I don’t usually discuss the business side of my work at Rhizome, but in light of recent layoffs across the tech industry I’ve decided to offer a free/pay-what-you-want workshop on going independent after Big Tech.
I want everyone experiencing layoffs right now to look back at it as the best thing that happened to them.
A lot of folk will want to go find another job, that's great. For those with a wild hair to test their mettle in the open waters, the freedom and variety of independent life is amazing.
I laid myself off (quit, no severance) from Google 2 years ago to give it a shot. The first year was a baptism by fire. Second year much better. I still have much to learn, but there's a lot I know now that I wish I'd known then.
Going from life inside an enormous (and lavish) corporate exoskeleton to total independence in the wilderness is a big shift... but for some it’s totally worth it.
We'll have an honest conversation about whether independent life is right for you, getting and managing clients, structuring your work, handling contracts, writing proposals, getting paid, and whatever else folk want to dive into.
I hope to see you there.
